Tierra del Fuego National Park

Excursions in summer Tierra del Fuego National Park

Tierra del Fuego National Park is a true natural treasure that protects 68,909 hectares of breathtaking landscapes. It is the only national park in Argentina that combines marine, forest and mountain environments, offering a unique experience. Here we find crystalline lakes, picturesque valleys and extensive peat bogs that remind us of the richness of this land.

This place keeps the history of the Yámanas, the ancient inhabitants of these lands. When walking the trails of the park, it is possible to come across “concheros”, mounds formed by the remains of mussels and mussels, which reveal that these lands have been inhabited for more than 10,000 years.

The park offers options for all tastes. From cozy forests that surround us with the scent of ñire, to the stunning cold waters of the Beagle Channel. There are trails that wind through the mountains and camping areas to relax by the rivers. The trails have different levels of difficulty and are clearly marked, allowing you to walk them on your own.

Lapataia Bay

One of the jewels of Tierra del Fuego National Park is the magnificent Lapataia Bay. Its name comes from the Yámana language and means “bay of the forest”. In addition to being a beautiful landscape, Lapataia is the end point of Route 3. There we will find the famous sign indicating the 3,063 kilometers that separate it from the Argentine capital and 17,848 km from Alaska! Through a circuit of walkways, we will be able to explore the surroundings and enjoy the beautiful wind of the sea mixed with the smell of the forest.

The Train at the End of the World

A fun way to explore the park is aboard the famous End of the World Train. If we book the excursion in Ushuaia in summer with Ushuaia Travel, you can travel several kilometers aboard the train. When we arrive at the last station, located inside the National Park, the guides will be waiting for us to show us the wonderful corners of this place that you can explore.

The End of the World Train is a unique experience that transports us to the history of the region. During the trip, we will travel the same path that the prisoners used to travel in the past, collecting firewood. The scenery is spectacular, with forests, rivers, peat bogs and the ruins of a Yámana settlement, the first natives to inhabit the area. We will also stop to appreciate the beautiful Macarena waterfall before entering the National Park.

Lakes Fagnano and Escondido Traditional Excursion

This option is an incredible alternative for those who wish to do the excursion in a quieter way, without the adrenaline of the 4×4 at full speed during the excursion. The duration is similar to the 4×4 but the trip is done with another vehicle for more comfort. Among the excursions in Ushuaia in summer, this is one of the less adventurous excursions but with the same objective, to have fun from beginning to end due to its unique and original landscape.

The views of the landscapes are spectacular. With viewpoints to take beautiful pictures. Not to mention if you get a nice day. The stop at the Garibaldi pass, where you can see the Escondido and Fagnano lakes will be a unique moment, and probably windy 🙂

Visiting the motorcycle museum when it is open is a must for motorcycle lovers and the general public. Then, go along route 3 and on the left you will see from different angles the huge lake Fagnano, imposing but quiet.

Navigation in the Beagle Channel

Sailing the Beagle Channel

Sailing the Beagle Channel in summer aboard an incredible catamaran will be one of the experiences you will enjoy the most on your trip to Ushuaia in the hottest season. You will spend approximately two and a half hours on the Beagle Channel, which connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. It extends approximately 180 kilometers along the southern coast of the Big Island of Tierra del Fuego.

During the ride aboard the catamaran, we will cross different islands that belong to the Bridges Archipelago. On one of them we will disembark and take a short walk to a panoramic point where we will enjoy unique views of the city and the mountains (subject to weather conditions).

You will see marine fauna and birds in the other islands of the Channel. Imperial cormorants, different species of seagulls and sea lions will be the kings of your sighting in this area.

But… and the Lighthouse at the End of the World? Don’t worry, we will see it too. It is worth clarifying that it is not very correct to name it that way, it is more of a tourist jargon and its real name is the Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse. It will be the last point of navigation where in the archipelago Les Éclaireurs we will visit this famous flagship lighthouse of Tierra del Fuego.

A not minor fact is that the catamarans are closed and heated, with the possibility to go out on deck and enjoy the fresh air. Although it is summer, it is a bit cooler 🙂

You will probably feel like having a latte with croissants, chocolate cake or other snacks. The good news is that there is a bar inside the catamaran where they offer all this to make your ride 11 points.
